In the last few days, I have heard this term so many times. But, I feel it is just being used so loosely that it actually loses its meaning. People think that talking about it or just saying it makes them modern, fashionable, or even cool.
But those who have been through it actually understand what it actually means; unfortunately, we have trivialized mental health so much that people take it as a joke. That makes mental health much more dangerous.
Imagine you have a fever, and instead of treating it with better food, medicines, and rest, you just start joking about it and keep building a false perspective that it’s nothing. What will happen? You will start suffering more and more to the point of no return. In this world, people have died from simple fever also. Now, if you have depression or any other mental health issue, it should be treated exactly like fever. Until we feel comfortable treating fever and depression at the same level, we will never come out of this stigma.
Since our childhood we are slowly and systematically made to believe that mental health is nothing and you can never have anything like that. Unfortunately, this has led us to create a human race that is extremely narrow-minded regarding mental health.
We don’t understand what it actually is and trivialize it to the core. This has to stop at some point and the only way to do that is to spread information and educate people about it. Make them see it similar to a fever to get it treated, and people don’t consider everyone as mad.
Social media is the biggest channel, and all of us should constructively talk about mental health and share real-life experiences to make more people aware of it.
This is a bigger problem in children than we can imagine because a child will never articulate feelings. Hence, it becomes much more important to systematically talk and expose children to mental health issues and make them aware that it’s nothing to be afraid about and it’s as normal as any other disease.
The mind is also an organ like the heart, lung, etc. There is no way we should treat it differently.
